Should You Buy Your Lease?

It’s important to learn how to calculate your car lease buyout for two reasons. First, you’ll want to determine how much to budget for your lease buyout. And second, you’ll want to determine whether or not it’s worthwhile to buy out your lease in the first place. You might find that the “Buyout Amount” or “Payoff Amount” is listed on your monthly leasing statement. But if it’s not, follow these steps:

  • Determine the residual value of the vehicle. Your original contract will contain an estimation of the residual value, or how much value your car will retain by the end of the lease contract. It is calculated at the beginning of the lease, so it’s not influenced by mileage penalties or wear and tear.
  • Determine the actual value of the vehicle. Because the residual value listed is simply an estimation, you’ll need to calculate the actual value of your car. Use resources like the Kelley Blue Book appraisal tool or our own Value Your Trade tool to get an instant market value calculation.
  • Compare the residual value and the actual value. Your car may be valued higher than the estimated residual value from the lease contract, which is a big benefit for you. If it is valued lower than estimated, don’t worry. You can always negotiate with the dealer.
  • Account for license and registration fees. When you switch from leasing to buying, you’ll need to think about the costs of ownership. This includes everything from title transfer costs to licensing to registration fees. Check with your leasing company, as well as your DMV to see what fees you’ll need to pay in the Webster and Fairport areas.
  • Account for sales tax. In addition to licensing and registration fees, you’ll also need to account for the local sales tax rate when you buy out your vehicle. This information will be found on your DMV site or state government website.

Lease-End Buyouts vs. Early Lease Buyouts

Timing is also important when determining how to calculate your lease buyout. If you make moves too early, you might end up with an early lease buyout instead of a lease-end buyout. Why does this matter?

  • Early Lease Buyout: When you end your lease contract too early, you lose power in your negotiations. The dealer has the advantage when it comes to pricing, especially if you try to end your lease early due to excessive wear or mileage.
  • Lease-End Buyouts: If you wait until the end of your lease, you retain better negotiating power. The dealer will likely give you a better deal than an early lease buyout. And if they feel like you’ll eventually sell the vehicle back to them, they’ll be even more likely to give you a great deal.
