Returning a Leased Car with Damage

Lease Agreement

When you lease a car, you sign a contract promising to return it in its original condition. But what if it is damaged as you drive around Pittsford? What do you do if there are dents or scratches on a leased car? Read on to learn more about returning a leased car with damage, and then contact us with any questions.

Pre-Return Inspection

When you return a vehicle you’re leasing, the dealership will inspect it and make a list of any damage that needs to be repaired to bring the vehicle back into its original condition. This inspection includes the following:

  • Scratches, dents, and chips: The inspection team will look over the car or truck to find dents, gouges, or chipped or flaking paint. Minor dings, light scratches, or chips are considered part of normal wear, but more serious imperfections will need to be repaired.
  • Tires and wheels: If the tires have less than an eighth of an inch of tread, you will need to replace them before turning the vehicle in or the dealership will charge you for the work. Likewise, if the wheels are damaged from hitting curbs, that will need to be fixed.
  • Windshield: Cracks or chips in the glass on your vehicle will need to be repaired.

What Happens if You Damage a Leased Vehicle?

If you damage a car that you are leasing, you will be responsible for fixing most damage before you return it; otherwise, you will be charged for repairs. The lease agreement spells out what repairs are covered and what isn’t. Check your Webster area insurance agent to see if the repairs are covered. When the vehicle is repaired, make sure the garage uses OEM replacement parts or it could void the warranty, which will also cost you money when you return the vehicle.

What to Do if There is Damage to a Leased Car

When there is damage to your leased vehicle, you can take it to a Fairport mechanic or body shop of your choice, or negotiate with the dealership on repairs. You may be able to roll repair costs onto your new lease, but you will still have to pay.
