If you’re not sure whether or not your vehicle has an oil dipstick, to begin with, you can always reference your owner’s manual for specifics. With that out of the way, here’s how to check car oil in five easy steps:

1. Ensure your vehicle is cool and has been turned off. It should also be parked on level ground.
2. Pull your vehicle’s hood release and locate the oil dipstick.
3. Remove the dipstick from the tube and wipe any oil off of it.
4. Now re-insert the dipstick back into the tube and pull it back out.
5. Take note of the oil level. There are often two indicators on the oil dipstick and as long as the oil level is between those two indicators, the oil level is at the correct spot.
