How To Check Oil In Your Car

Adding oil to engine

When you purchase a new or pre-owned vehicle from our team, you can rest assured that it’ll tackle your Pittsford commute with grace. Our selection of inventory has been given a thorough once-over to ensure that they’re in optimal operating condition. However, regularly checking your vehicle’s oil is a great way to catch any problems before they become major issues.

Oil is integral to your vehicle’s engine and if you ever run low on oil or ignore the check oil light, you may incur costly repairs. Oil checks should be performed at least once a month to ensure that nothing has gone awry. But, what if you don’t know how to check the oil in your car? We’ve got you covered. Today, the service experts from Ide VW of East Rochester will go over how to check your car’s oil so that you can continue to keep your ride in tip-top shape!

How To Check Car Oil In 5 Easy Steps

Before we go over how to check the oil in your car, you should be aware that some newer models may not use a traditional oil dipstick. If this is the case, it’s best you bring your vehicle into our service center for assistance. If you’re not sure whether or not your vehicle has an oil dipstick, to begin with, you can always reference your owner’s manual for specifics. With that out of the way, here’s how to check car oil in five easy steps:

  1. Ensure your vehicle is cool and has been turned off. It should also be parked on level ground.
  2. Pull your vehicle’s hood release and locate the oil dipstick.
  3. Remove the dipstick from the tube and wipe any oil off of it.
  4. Now re-insert the dipstick back into the tube and pull it back out.
  5. Take note of the oil level. There are often two indicators on the oil dipstick and as long as the oil level is between those two indicators, the oil level is at the correct spot.

If you notice your oil level is incorrect, you may need to add oil as required. If you have too much oil, schedule a service appointment with our experts for assistance and avoid driving around Webster.

Resetting Your Check Oil Light

If you’ve already gotten an oil change and your check oil light is still illuminated during your Fairport adventures, you may need to reset your oil light. We suggest you only reset your oil light if you’ve actually gotten an oil change. Otherwise, you may damage your vehicle. Let’s take a look at how to reset your oil light:

  1. Turn everything in your vehicle completely off except for the engine.
  2. Locate the “reset” button on your dashboard.
  3. Hold down the reset button until the oil change light starts flashing.
  4. Turn your vehicle completely off and back on.
  5. Your oil light should now be off!

Keep in mind that these steps may vary depending on your exact make and model.
