How to Reset Tire Pressure Light

These days, most new vehicles in Pittsford and beyond come with a Tire Pressuring Monitoring System (TPMS) that, as the name suggests, is in charge of monitoring your tire pressure. Drivers used to have to do this themselves, but now your vehicle will notify you if there’s something wrong with your tire pressure by activating a light. However, if you’ve already confirmed that your tires are filled to the proper level but you still see the TPMS light on, you may have to manually reset it. Resetting the Tire Pressure Light

If the TPMS is working properly, it will turn the dashboard light off once your tires are at the proper level. However, if the light remains on, there are a few steps you can take to fix it:

1. Drive at or above 50 mph for 10 minutes, (of course, where going 50mph is permitted) which should cause the sensor to reset the next time you turn on your vehicle.
2. Turn your vehicle off, then turn the key to the “on” position, but don’t start the car. Then, hold down the TPMS reset button until you see the tire pressure light blink three times. Release the button, then start the car and wait for 20 minutes–the sensor should refresh. The reset button is typically found beneath the steering wheel, but your owner’s manual may indicate a different location.
3. Inflate all your tires to 3 PSI over the recommended amount (again, you can find this in your owner’s manual), then deflate them completely. Include the spare tire, which may have a sensor as well. Once all the tires are totally deflated, inflate them to the recommended tire pressure, and the sensor should fix itself.
4. Turn your vehicle off and disconnect the positive battery cable with a wrench. Then turn the car on and honk the horn for about three seconds, which should discharge any power still stored in the vehicle. Reconnect the battery and your TPMS should reset.
